Puerto Rico – Rainforest

Puerto Rico – Rainforest

This is my first actual rainforest. MJ and I were looking forward to this very much – I think JA enjoyed the heck out of it too, but I think he probably wanted another day on the beach.

You can drive to the visitor center and to certain areas around the interior of the rainforest, but you have to get actual tickets to the interior (they limit the number of guests per day). I loved this because it meant we weren’t going to be dealing with heavy crowds at any given point. Worked out pretty well.

The tower had some awesome views of the surrounding area, all they way down to the ocean. Just an expanse of green and blue.

This was a neat hike and probably the most crowded location we visited in the interior. We lucked out and got there in time to snag a parking spot on the side of the road – the roads were narrow and there wasn’t a lot of space at all to park.

This is the lower of the falls to see – there’s another higher up, but the climb can be rough. MJ chose to wait for us here while James and I went up.

I’m not sure why folks thought this would be ok in flipflops but whatever. It was entertaining to watch them slide and regret their decisions.

The waterfall was pretty, certainly hard to show how tall it is in these pictures. More impressive than it looks. Getting a photo was hard because of the limited space up there, but oh well. Hiking up and down was the highlight.

This was a private pool for the people who lived here at one point. No swimming allowed now, not sure you’d want to in that murk.

JA is laughing because he thinks all I do is take pictures of his butt. I take pictures of lots of things besides his behind, as is clearly evidenced by this blog.

Another hike! Heading out to one of the rivers that goes through the rainforest. This is on the outer side of the national park, no tickets required. But it was recommended by the visitor center.

So…I don’t think bamboo is native to Puerto Rico, but it sure does grow well.

It’s a pretty hike and nicely maintained.

…and somehow we found the Barton Springs of Puerto Rico.

We have three of these at home. JA was thoroughly amused.

We stopped for ice cream outside the main road to the rainforest. It has edible glitter on it. This is important, not because it adds to the taste (the whole sundae was delicious) but because it makes it extra pretty and I’ll be adding edible glitter to everything now, thank you.
